I’ll say tomorrow:Gillard

by Alan Thornhill

The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, is planning to hold a press conference tomorrow (Thursday) to reveal what she will do about Kevin Rudd’s resignation – and his likely – but still undeclared – leadership challenge.

In a brief statement tonight, Ms Gillard praised Mr Rudd and said she was sorry that he had quit.

“Mr Rudd was a strong and effective advocate for Australia’s interests overseas,” Ms Gillard said.

“During his period of service as Foreign Minister there were many achievements.

“He strongly pursued Australia’s interests in the world.”

Mr Rudd said he had quit because Ms Gillard chose not to disown attacks Simon Crean – and other Labor figures – had launched against him.

The Prime Minister said Mr Rudd had not raised this matter with her.

“I am disappointed that the concerns Mr Rudd has publicly expressed this evening were never personally raised with me,” she said.

“Nor did he contact me to discuss his resignation prior to his decision,” Ms Gillard added.

“I plan to hold a press conference tomorrow to make a further statement,” the Prime Minister said.
